LGBTQIA+ Premarital Counseling and Preparation

By Maggie Thompson, LCMFT

Marriage, and what it means, has changed over the decades of modern human history.  At times, it was an institution of patriarchal rights. At times it was the way to own property. At times it was an integral part of societal structure. And most times, it is a symbolic joining of two people who are in love.

Couples, including LGBTQIA+ couples, want to be married for a variety of their own reasons.  As a supporter of everyone’s right to the institution of marriage, I believe in supporting not only the wedding, but married lives, and preparation for it, as well.

The goal of premarital counseling and preparation is to assist the couple to focus on communication styles, history, goals, and plans, which demonstrates the processes at work in the couple’s relationship. Engaging in dialogue about these processes will help provide the couple clarity about their belief systems, what they want, and how they will relate to one another.

As a foundation, I use family systems theory and couples’ communication techniques, and I follow the Premarital Counseling Guide for Same Gender Couples: A Planning Resource from the Office of Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, and Transgender Concerns.  4 Modules are completed with the couple:

  • Getting Acquainted
  • Communication
  • Commitment, Change, and Planning
  • The Wedding

The couple also has the option to complete monthly and/or annual Marriage Check-Up appointments after the wedding.

The goal always is to be respectful, apologize when mistakes happen, and live your truth.
