Psychophysiology

Psychophysiology addresses the relationship between our mind and body.  Our emotional states affect our health, and our health affects our mental state.  Just like stress can cause ulcers, and a bad illness can create a bad mood, the relationship between the two goes both ways.  In Psychophysiology, we seek to affect one by manipulating the other due to certain principles like;

  • A relaxed state facilitates psychotherapy
  • Observing physical changes detects defensive and inhibitory reactions
  • Biofeedback instruments identify maladaptive responses
  • Psychophysiology can be used when verbal expression is hindered
  • The body retains information, even when it is put out of the mind
  • The client can feel progress physically
  • Psychophysiology provides personalized, individualized modalities for the therapist to use

During a psychophysiological session, a client can expect to share their current mood and mental state, any chronic problems or treatment resistant symptoms they may be experiencing, and what they would like to change.  The therapist will use a variety of treatments including biofeedback instruments, stretching/physical movement, mindfulness, visualization, and others to induce change.  The therapist will never physically touch or manipulate the client, as the client is in total control of their personal space.
